What are Garden Shades, Tents, Roof Canopy and Sun canopies
There are several different types or terms to categorize the Garden Canopy. In the previous post we examined the high level terms of Garden Canopy, but here I would like to introduce the terms, which breakdown to other very specific type of products, depending on your needs:
Garden Shades
Garden Tents
Roof Canopy
Sun canopies

Garden Tents – are considered the typical frame type structure with an awning that drapes across all sides, as discussed previously with Gazebo type of structures.
What are the top reasons and benefits for considering to purchase a Garden Tent:
- They provide a long term and/or seasonal shade in your backyard or garden.
- It can blend in well with the color theme of Garden Furniture and provide protection from the rain.
- You are jazzing up your garden, like splashing on a new color of paint on the wall; adding this “room” like addition gives your patio a whole new dimension and character.
- With the last thought in mind, spending 150-500 US Dollars on a quality Gazebo type Garden Tents, will add major resale value to your home. If you are in the midst of trying to sell your home, and want to showcase certain areas on the cheap— this is one of the best ways. I’ll discuss this more below.
- Want to workout in outdoors in your elliptical, but need protection from sun and rain, what better way to “run” in your backyard and still have your TV plugged in nearby under this Gazebo. Of course depending on the neighbors you’ll want to chain down some those items, so I suggest you build around a concrete enforced pole when considering spots to add the Canopy.
- Have a deck and want to cover up the grill when you are cooking even during tougher weather? Most of these products can still be placed on wooden decks, although you might want to consider reinforcements for the bottom of poles, to protect and keep the structure from shifting.

Garden Shades, Roof Canopy & Sun Canopies – are considered those type of covers that are less conventional and are attached typically without the 4 corner poles and usually are built across a more permanent and durable foundation, attached to the home or cable. Roof canopy, apply to those canopy or shades that are harnessed to the roof as a nylon awning that can be removed or even retractable, see Retractable Patio Awning section below. Garden Shades & Sun Canopies are more considered these new breed of very strong colorful awning that can be attached virtually to any structure. They still do provide the same type of elegant look to any backyard. They typically looks like Sails of shape or called “Shade Sails” or “Sun Shades.” What are the top reasons and benefits for considering to purchase a Garden Shades, Sun Canopies:
- Besides the already mention Garden Canopy or Garden Tent reasons, these shades provide a very excellent block from sun of UV radiation. Most have state of the art material designed to block UV rays and still resist moisture residue and extreme temperatures, as most are waterproofed and water resistant.
- Alternative method to design your backyard, with some chic colors and irregular shaped sail-type pattern, which make the covered area very attractive and enhance the property by certainly adding architectural style and flair.
- They look complicated as though they need lots of “things” to hang it up, but actually not the case. They can be attached to anchors to home, a tree, or outdoor columns, or the adjacent garage. They can be supported by either steel or wooden posts that are embedded in concrete perimeter. They can easily be removed as required.
- The wind can be fierce, so making sure they are tight is quite important. Most typically have stainless steel reinforced rings, so no worries on fly away or tearing.
- The Sun Canopies are the most versatile type of shading you can provide in your outdoor living space, because of their shape and size they can cover courtyards, car ports, pool, deck, and children’s play area, even all in one!

Retractable Patio & Window Awnings – are considered more the permanent and more expensive route to provide Shade Canopy and Shade Structures in place in the backyard. They are always attached to the home. I do cover this in another blog post, but will provide you a link to view some of the products available for you. What are the top reasons and benefits for considering to purchase a Retractable Patio Shade Canopy & Window Awnings:
- Obviously these structures allow for complete control of how much shading you need throughout the day or even season.
- They are a permanent fixture that provide the ease of mind about its stability.
- They do add a major appealing to your home if you are trying to sell it.
Let me finally cover the dollars and cents behind purchasing any one of the types of canopy mentioned above, to help provide a guide.
Garden Tents , Gazebo Canopy – the price varies from $100 – $500, depending on brand name and features, size does not vary much. However investing in a very elegant $300 dollar Gazebo can produce a net gain of over $1000 in resale value of your home if “throw in” the Gazebo as part of the home purchase; its a neat feature that many potential home buyers will surely fall in love with it.
Garden Shades, Roof Canopy & Sun Canopies – the price of these can range from as low as under $100 to $1000 depending on the material quality, the size that definitely vary. However, if you have plans to raise the resale value with easier and cheaper means in backyard for instance– this type of canopy can probably “triple” your resale value if you were to include the Sun Canopy as part of the purchase price of your home. Regardless whether you need them short term or as a permanent structure, be sure that these are an investment and with proper care can last for over 5-10 years.
